2007 Academic Results at Moorland School

87% 5 A* - C pass rate

Some highlights:-

  • Achieved 87% 5 A* - C pass rate with a non-selective entry.
  • 70% of pupils achieved at least one A or A* grade. (64% last year)
  • On average, pupils passed 7.8 exams each at A* - C
  • On average, pupils passed 4.4 exams each at grade B and above.
  • English literature:- 50% of the pupils achieving at least a B grade.
  • English language:- 39% the pupils achieving at least a B grade.
  • Science:- 61% of pupils achieving at least a B grade.
  • Maths:- 57% of pupils achieving at least a B grade.

The 87% figure (with a non-selective entry) compares to 93% in 2006 and 2005. Please note that the 87% figure compares to a national figure of around 60%. Please also note that our high 87% figure was not boosted by multiple vocational qualifications which many schools are to artificially enhance their results thus lessening the importance of the core subjects.

FURTHER ANALYSIS OF OUR 2007 RESULTS...........

It is well worth looking at how our pupils improved from their year 9 SATs performance. This is due to the fact that we are not an academically selective school (no entrance test). The government call this value added (VA).

At KS3 year 9 SATs, the government use a scoring system based upon level 8 (51 points), level 7 (45 points), level 6 (39 points), level 5 (33 points) etc. A student getting 5,5 & 6 for instance would score a total of 105 points with an average of 35. In 2005, the 2007 GCSE students took SATs and achieved an average of 34 across the group. Each student received an average score and we can compare this to national statistical information. For instance we can calculate that students nationally with an average of SAT of 35 will achieve a GCSE performance at a certain level. In fact, the system used is called the "capped total points score". This takes the best 8 GCSE grades and assigns each grade with a score (A*=58, A=52, B=46, C=40, D=34 and so on). Nationally, the median score for a student with a KS3 SAT score of 35 average is around 320. For example.........

CCCCCCCC = 320 points (capped)
BBCCCCDD = 320 points (capped)
BBCCCCDDDD = 320 points (capped because we only use 8 GCSE's).

What does this mean for Moorland? Well, it means that our value added score is incredibly high!!! This is because, looking at the scores at KS3 (the group averaged of 34 in 2005), the group should have performed at around a 297 average. Our average capped total point score this year is 345 (with an average total points score 442).

Pupil X might have been expected to get CCCCCDDD in an average performing mainstream school; but at Moorland, X would achieve a whole grade higher in around 8 subjects (eg. BBBBBCCC).

Our rough VA figure from KS3 to GCSE this year is 1050 which is extremely high (probably within the top 10% of schools nationally for value added).

The biggest 'improvers' from KS3 to GCSE were:-

  1. Rose (greatest improvement)
  2. Irtiza
  3. Andrew
  4. Carly
  5. Levi
  6. Scott

Some highlights for year 10 pupils who took modular maths and science GCSE courses this summer:-

  • Maths:- 20% of pupils achieved the top A* grade.
  • Maths:- 43% of pupils achieved the A grade or higher (A or A* grade).
  • Maths:- 77% of pupils achieved the B grade or higher (B, A or A* grade).
  • Maths:- Well done to Phyllis and Ashley (R) for getting every question correct on the exam paper!! Jared, Nell, Nathan, Paul & Charlotte only dropped one mark!!
  • Science:- 67% of pupils achieved the B grade or higher (B, A or A* grade).

2008 Results???

2008 will see the numbers entered for GCSE rising to 37. The standard of results (modular and coursework) from our final year students has been exceptional so far. It is also very interesting to analyse the group that started year 11 in September 2007:-

Year 9 KS3 Average point score

English
Maths
Science
Average
2006/2007 year 11 group
33
37.6
31.4
34
2007/2008 year 11 group
36.2
41.1
38.4

38.5

(level 8=51, level 7=45, level 6=39, level 5=33)
(level 8 is only possible in maths)

The difference between 34 and 38.5 is quite significant. This means that, in theory, our capped average total point score in 2008 will be around 42 points higher. This translates to ONE grade higher over 7 GCSE's. This seems to be a solid prediction looking at the results the pupils have achieved in year 10 modular exams .

OTHER LOCAL SCHOOLS 2007 RESULTS (estimates).....

  • Oakhill 62.5% (15 / 24 children achieved 5 C's or above)
  • QEGS 90.7%
  • Westholme 98%
  • Bowland 70%
  • Ribblesdale 69%
  • Hameldon 43%
