Moorland School is located in the heart of the Ribble Valley. Most children attend Moorland on a daily basis; around 70% of the children are day children and 30% live on site. In may ways, coming to Moorland as a day pupil is just like going to a state school. For instance:-

  • We have a similar day, starting at 8.45am and finishing at 4pm, Monday - Friday. No Saturday teaching.
  • We follow the national curriculum.
  • We do a wide range of GCSE's (good ones!!) in the senior school.
  • All of our teachers are qualified professionals.
  • Children may come to school on a school bus.

So what are the differences? There are two very important questions you need answers for..............

  1. Why pay to attend Moorland when state schools are free? State schools are free but expectations are often low as they strive to achieve just 5 grade C's at GCSE. Classes tend to be very big and behaviour tends to be very poor. State schools have very little control over their entry and they find it difficult to deal properly with the issues of bullying and bad behaviour in and out of the classroom. At Moorland, the classes are well-taught, quiet and relaxed. Pupils who need help get it. Pupils who need to be pushed are challenged towards the highest grades. Across the country (and especially at Moorland!!), private schools out-perform state schools in just about every category. Every teacher at Moorland, including the principal, has taught in the state sector and pupil behaviour is one overriding reason why teaching here is so much better. We don't have to worry about class disruption and teaching purely to maintain behaviour. Children learn better in a relaxed and stress free environment. One other factor to think about when choosing between state schools and Moorland is the type of qualifications offered. We go for the traditional, demanding and well thought of qualifications; we concentrate on the core subjects and we aim high. Too many state schools are rushing away from proper qualifications towards easier diplomas, NVQ's and other vocational subjects; many do not involve doing an exam.

  2. Why choose Moorland over other private school in the area? You decide. The factors to consider are:-
  • What are the results at SATs and GCSE like?
  • Are the subjects offered decent ones?
  • Is the school a member of a professional association such as the ISA?
  • The quality of the teachers, are they subject qualified and is the school able to recruit and retain good staff and offer standard things such as the teachers pension scheme?
  • Does the school follow the national curriculum and do SATs and other assessment tests that are nationally recognised?
  • How much does it cost per term including extras?
  • Is the school investing in new facilities?
  • Are the number rising?
  • What do the children's books look like?
  • What is the general academic range in the classes?
  • Are you able to look around the school at any time (not just on an artificial day)?
  • Are you able book a taster day at any time (not just on an artificial day)?

MOORLAND SCORES VERY HIGHLY!!!!!
