Frequently asked questions (Entrance)
- How many terms are there per year and what are the dates?
There are three terms in each academic year, the dates can be found here.
- Does my child have to pass an entrance exam?
Entrance depends upon interview and school reports. It is important that children can meet the demands
of the national curriculum. Good behaviour and a good attitude to work is favoured over pure academic ability.
- If my child attends the preparatory school, will there be a place in the
senior school?
Moorland generally guarantees that a child will be able to go right through the
school. This applies from nursery to preparatory and also from preparatory to
senior.
- What is the age limit for entry
Moorland goes up to GCSE level (16 years of age) and has 5 senior years. The
last two years of school (years 10 & 11) are nationally called "key stage
four", this is when public examinations are taken (details
here). The latest entry point is in year 10. Pupils who enter Moorland who
have English as a second language will often join in year 9 or earlier. Pupils
with high academic achievements could also join the school in year 11.
- Can boarders stay on at Moorland after year 11 to do A levels?
From 2009 we are planning to offer a full A level course (for girls only) in partnership with a local independent school. Places will generally only be given to hardworking girls who have been students at Moorland (we must know what they are like!!) and who have also completed their GCSE studies to a high level. At least 6 B's at GCSE would be the entry requirement. Please contact Mr Smith for more details.
- What happens after 16 year of age?
Moorland provided help and advice for children leaving year 11. We are able to recommend a nuber of day schools and boarding schools offering a range of further studies. Most students go on to do A levels
- Are there any additional costs for boarding?
Moorland boarding fees are all-inclusive; there is no extra charge for items such
as books and laundry. A charge is made for optional subjects, individual tuition
or additional musical instruments if they are taken. GCSE examination fees are
also charged.
- What is weekly boarding?
Weekly boarding is when a pupil has weekends at home with parents or guardians.
Children return to school on Sunday evening or Monday morning (before 8.45am),
they return home after school on Friday (4.00pm).
- Can a day pupil occasionally stay as a boarder?
Yes if space is available, it costs just £30 per night.
- Can I come to the school for a visit more than once?
Choosing the right school is a huge decision, Moorland allows parents and prospective
pupils the chance to visit the school as many times as they feel are necessary.
- What is the youngest age for boarding?
Moorland will usually accept boarders from the age of 8.
- What options for A levels or other further education choices are available
post 16?
Children can attend a number of local 6th form centres or colleges which offer
'A' level courses. This is often an excellent option for boarders who wish to
study A levels whilst still remaining in the school. Clitheroe Grammar offers
excellent A level courses.
- What help can the school give if my child does not speak English?
Moorland has had a long history of accepting a small number of boarders from outside the UK. We
would expect that the child would have attained a reasonable level of written
and spoken English before joining. Our class sizes are small which helps to quickly
develop English language skills, we also run an IGCSE English course.
- Can my child join the school at any time?
Yes
- When should I apply for visas (Non EU pupils)?
Some overseas parents should bear in mind that they need time for their children
to take to secure visas. The UK Visa Service is extremely slow in some parts of
the world and it can take several months before a visa is granted. Moorland can
provide your child with a firm offer of a place together with a letter of invitation.
The UK Embassy will normally issue a single entry student visa. You need to ensure
that when your child arrives in the UK they are carrying a letter from the school
which accurately identifies them and sets out the duration or the visit and the
examinations they will be taking. The immigration officer at the port or airport
will normally issue a multi-entry visa to cover up to two years of that period.
