Timetabling for September 2008
The average class size in the senior school in 2007/2008 was 15.2. Our year 11 (that left in June) were a year group of 37 split into 2 for every class; we have seen some other year groups grow in size, particularly year 7 & 8. Whilst most classes have been split throughout the year, there have been times where the year group have been taught as a whole. From September 2008, all year groups in the senior school will be taught in 2 groups. Year 7 in September will be between 32 – 34 children whilst year 8 in September grows to 32 children. We will therefore have a very healthy KS3 (key stage 3 = year 7 , 8 & 9) consisting of around 90 pupils.
We are very keen to strengthen the teaching team in the senior school and an additional teacher will join us full-time, together with a part-time music/drama teacher (to boost aesthetic and creative subjects and to achieve a broader and more balanced
educational experience – in line with the recommendations in our ISI report). Another change we are making involves the increased use of community resources (eg. Library, theatre and sporting venues).
Our 5 period day is also likely to change. In all probability, we will change the teaching day to involve 6 lessons as opposed to the current 5 (school will still run from 8.45am – 4pm). This will help towards achieving a broader curriculum. For instance, we plan to extend the horse riding option to include year 9 next year, more music & drama and we have provisionally booked the swimming pool for senior use on Wednesday afternoons.
Senior Drama & Music
Throughout the autumn term and into spring, we will be working on a production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’. Mrs Sanderson has ordered the scripts and music. Rehearsals and the final production will be held at the new state-of-the-art, Clitheroe Grand.
Year 11 positions of responsibility
I’m delighted to announce that William Heseltine will be Head Boy and Katie Lee will be Head Girl from September. Sharnie Rice and Sam Taylor take over the roles of Head Boarders. Many of our year 11 pupils will also take on prefect roles.
Whole school assemblies
From September, we have booked the Clitheroe Grand every second Friday to facilitate a whole school assembly. Pupil participation will be foremost and guest speakers will be invited. It is hoped that parents would attend when possible. The Grand has a super cafe bar and parents would be able to join us for a coffee afterwards.

Police checking of staff and visitors to Moorland
All Moorland staff (full-time, part-time and visiting) undertake enhanced CRB checks, reference checks and identity checks that are renewed every 3 years. Unless you are simply dropping off or picking up a pupil, all visitors to Moorland must check in at reception (or with a matron out of office hours) and receive a visitors badge.
New classroom development
Detailed news about the timetabling of our classroom development will appear on the website during the next couple of weeks. We are putting in place plans to rapidly accelerate the project to completion.
