Festival of Chemistry - May 2009 |

A team of four pupils from years 7 & 8 travelled to John Moores' University in Liverpool for a Festival of Chemistry. The event was organised by the Salter's Institute to promote science, and give able pupils a chance to see chemistry in a wider context.
The four (Jack Rimmer, Matthew Brown, Gemma Walker, Bethan Shaw) competed in two challenge events against teams from other schools across the northwest. |

Junior Mathematical Challenge - Apr 2009 |

The Junior Mathematical Challenge is an introductory challenge for pupils in Years 8 or below. This takes the form of five multiple choice questions to be say in exam conditions.
Several pupils from Moorland School sat the exam and performed fantastically across the board. Jack Thomson, Matthew Brown and Alex Bozdog all came away with Silver awards, whilst Adrian Bozdog also achieved a Bronze award. |

Red Nose Charity Day at Moorland School - Mar 2009 |

Pupils at Moorland School celebrated Red Nose Day by taking part in a variety of fun activities. Sticking to the theme of doing something 'Funny for Money', the pupils and teachers dressed up in fancy dress, took part in a football competition and a 'Fun Run'.
Pupils and teachers came to school dressed in some of the most elaborate costumes ever seen at Moorland. There was a competition for the best dressed pupils, which was won by Sam Taylor and Jacob Bower who came as characters from the Tv series Little Britain. The runners up were the fantastically dressed Lauren Gray and William Clark who came as a horse and the Joker respectively.
The football tournament took place all week and saw teams of pupils compete against each other, which raised £75 alone. The winners were Sean Creeley, James Quigley, Luke Powney, Louis Wright, Alex Webster and Matthew Window. The tournament concluded with a special match against the 'Celebs' (teachers), who came away as modest and exhausted victors. |

UEFA Team Challenge - Feb 2009 |

Pupils at Moorland School have always been known for their commitment to sports and this time they have really proved it. Moorland School students finished as runners-up in the UEFA event which was open to schools from across the continent.
The UEFA challenge competition is renowned for being one of the most competitive competitions of its kind. It gives the participants the opportunity to show off their silky skills.
The pupils were coached to success by Charlie Jackson, the schools coach, who is UEFA licensed to coach and also runs the Matrix Soccer Academy in addition to being a technical coach at Blackburn Rovers Academy.
The school received a generous amount of football kit from UEFA for doing so well but not being put off by being runners-up the pupils at Moorland School are determined to finish first next year!

Visit to the Mayor's Parlour - Feb 2009 |

Year 6 children from Moorland School enjoyed a morning at the Mayor's Parlour in Clitheroe. They learnt about the duties of the town council and observed the various types of regalia used at ceremonial occassions. |

Fridy 12th September - Year 10 & 11 football trials for the ISA (North) team
ISA membership now means that we now have access to a multitude of sports matches against other schools. It also mean that we can participate in national events such as swimming, netball, football, athletics etc. On the 12th, we will take several of our year 10 & 11 pupils for the U16 football trial at North Cestrian Grammar School in Manchester. Thursday 21st August - GCSE results day
Pupils are welcome to come into school after 9am to receive their GCSE results. Pupils can also telephone the school for the good news that awaits them! In the last 3 years, Moorland year 11 pupils have averaged 91% 5A*-C (with a very high average point score). We see this year as no exception. |

Wednesday 20th August - Sleepless night
Our 2007/2008 year 11 pupils will get very little sleep as they await their results the following day. All the staff at Moorland wish them well. |

Friday 18th July - Fantastic KS3 SATs Results!!!
Our year 9's certainly did us proud with our best ever year 9 SAT results. Our results were simply miles above the national average. Here are some highlights. (Remember that level 5 is the minimum expected level at this age; level 6 is above national average and 7 is excellent performance. Level 8 is only achievable in maths):-
Maths
50% achieved level 7 or 8 - (17% level 8)
72% achieved level 6 and above.
100% met the expected national level (5).
Science
33% achieved level 7
78% achieved level 6 and above.
95% met the expected national level (5).
English
83% achieved level 6 and above.
100% met the expected national level (5).
Overall, 30 % of the scores were at level 7 & 8!
Our average point score is fantastic!! Level 5 scores 33 points, level 6 scores 39 points, level 7 scores 45 points and level 8 scores 51 points on the governments scoring system.
Maths: average = 41.4
Science: average = 39.3
English: average = 38.7
Test overall average = 39.8 (just a tiny bit above a 6, 6 ,6 average SAT score)
Mr Smith, Mrs Spouse & Mr Edwards took year 9 out for a curry in Clitheroe just after the SATs test.......... they did us proud!!!! Well done year 9, and good luck in year 10!!

Monday 4th February 2008 - ISI report now online
The Independent School Inspectorate visited Moorland in October 2007. A four person team spent four days in the school looking at all aspects of our operation. A copy has been sent out to parents and an online version can be found here. |

7th February - Chinese New Year Celebration in Manchester
Mr Smith took a smal group of boarding pupils from Hong Kong to Chinatown in Manchester.
After a two hour banquet pupils visited a Chinese supermarket to stock up on foods
from home. 2008 is the year of the Rat. A Rat Year is a time of hard work, activity, and renewal. |

Friday 18th January 2008 - The ski party departs for Alpe D'Huez
A party of 56 enjoyed the superb snow conditions in Alpe D'Huez. The top 2 of the 5 groups were skiing red and black runs, including the world famous Sarenne. |

Reporters and a film crew from BBC Manchester visited our sports hall to interview Mr Jackson and to film the children's incredible football skills. |

Monday 7th January 2008 - happy new year !
The new term starts with record numbers in the school. We welcome Emily and Aynsley into the junior school; we also welcome Zak, Thomas, Tom and David into the senior school. Mrs Ravat takes over History covering for Mrs Neesham who continues her maternity leave. Miss Gibson joins us as PE teacher and sports coordinator. Good luck to year 11 pupils who are embarking on a series of mock GCSE's. |

Mr Smith visited Hong Kong. He welcomed many visitors to the Moorland stand in the exhibition hall. He also visited a Hong Kong secondary school in Tseung Kwan O and gave a short presentation to year 10 and year 12 pupils. |

A team of 4 inspectors visited Moorland to start the full inspection (see the ISI website). Mr & Mrs Smith received the feedback on Thursday and were both delighted with the findings. The report will be published on this website and sent out to parents as soon as we receive it. |

Uefa feature for former pupil
Former Moorland pupil, Rhesia Baron, has made an appearance on the uefa.com website highlighting her work with uefa on the grassroots programme for European football. Rhesia left Moorland in 2005 and studied A levels at Clitheroe Grammar school. She is now in America on a football scholarship (with pre-law). |

Welcome back!!
We start the autumn term with new staff and lots of new pupils. Mrs McPartlin joins the senior school to teach English (with Mrs Spouse) and Mrs Cooley joins to teach French and German (with Mrs Wilson). Click
here for a full list of staff. We were behind schedule on the new classroom block so our efforts went into improving our existing ones.
We now have record numbers in the school with our largest year group being year 11 with 37 pupils (split into 2 classes). |

Welcome back to an extremely busy end to the academic year with only a few weeks to go before the long summer break. This week, we welcomed 6 children for taster days (4 in juniors and 2 in the senior school); places were offered to 5. We also welcomed 3 children who came in for a look around. |

19th April 2007 - Super GCSE results for year 10 pupils
Our year 10 pupils recently took their first modular GCSE exam for maths. The results were out today and they were outstanding. One third of the children achieved A/A* grades (12 out of 36). Well done to Phyllis, Thomas, Brioni, Paul and Heather who achieved A* grades. Mrs Sanderson's 19 pupils achieved 5 A*'s, 7 A's and 7 B's. A HUGE well done to Phyllis who managed to get all 50 correct! Also to Rebecca in Mr Edwards group who got 49/50 correct on the foundation paper. |

Well done to both teams for a high energy game of football in our sports hall. The final score was 4 - 2 to Moorland. This adds to the victory in the previous weeks year 7 & 8 game against Oakhill. |

26th January 2007 - Ski trip to Alpe D'Huez
The general impression was that this was the best ski trip the school has been on. Recent snow meant we enjoyed great ski conditions. Many of the skiing groups took advantage of the great snow to try some off-piste techniques. Our new hotel, the Beausoleil, was situated right by all the main ski lifts which allowed all abilities to ski right to the door from the very first day. |
