Moorland Boarding School and Day School

The Senior School follows the criteria set down in the National Curriculum. Whilst we fully support its content we also believe in retaining the best traditional approaches and values in the education of our pupils, in order for them to become well rounded individuals. Mathematics Department

This year we are excited by a new Mathematics Scheme for use in year 7, 8 & 9. It has the content to teach the core to all pupils and stretch the brighter ones. Consequently some of Year 9 have already had the thrill of meeting and succeeding with algebraic fractions that might test some of the brightest pupils in Year 11.

The aim of the work covered in Years 7 and 8 is to make the pupils confident in all areas of Mathematics in the National Curriculum. The work is consolidating Levels 4 and 5, which have a wider and deeper content than the same levels in the Junior School, and introducing some Level 6 topics. Pupils are given Investigative work on a regular basis to encourage them to think for themselves and to prepare them for the coursework in GCSE Mathematics.

Year 9 introduces more difficult topics at Levels 6 and 7 and the content is based on the GCSE Syllabus as well as consolidation, practice and preparation for the SATS examinations in May. Pupils are entered for the SATS examination at the appropriate level: 4 – 6, 5 – 7 or 6 – 8. Most pupils achieve Level 6 or 7. One pupil achieved a Level 8, which was a significant achievement.

Years 10 and 11 prepare for the AQA GCSE in Mathematics at Higher Level (Grades A* is the highest achievable) or Intermediate Level (Grades B is the highest achievable). The pass rate is significantly above the National Average. The two pieces of coursework (Number and Handling Data) which counts 20% of the final examination are completed in Year 10. The level of entry is decided in January of Year 11 after the Mock examinations.

Pupils can opt to take AQA Statistics GCSE as an extra subject. This can be taken at Higher Level or Foundation Level . Pupils can submit the same coursework as the Handling Data used for the Mathematics GCSE. This extra subject can be a useful, yet challenging,. GCSE pass.

The method of teaching in our Maths classes is traditional but the size of classes gives a relaxed atmosphere and encourages pupils to ask for and receive help when required.

The department has ample and varied resources to give pupils extra help or extension on all topics and is staffed by well qualified and experienced teachers.
