Physical Education
We
offer Physical Education (P.E.) as a GCSE option. Using the Oxford Cambridge and
RSA Examinations, our pupils have the choice of being assessed for various sports
including athletics, badminton, basketball, fencing, football, golf, hockey, horse
riding, hockey, judo, netball and swimming.
We have a number of professional coaches who, in small pupil to coach ratio,
are able to help our pupils achieve high standards of performance. Using video
analysis and peer assessment, pupils are also able to monitor their own improvement.
In conjunction with the practical lessons, we have a rigorously taught academic
programme covering factors affecting performance, physiology, sport psychology,
nutrition and social conditions and safety aspects. These lessons are reinforced
through our science subjects which have a number of topics in common.
An important aspect of GCSE Phys. Ed., is the ability to coach and assess others.
GCSE pupils are given the opportunity to take on additional responsibilities coaching
lower school pupils in their chosen activity. This has proved extremely successful;
as we have seen pupils not only improve their methods of delivering coaching but
also develop important leadership skills, become more assertive, develop initiative
and confidence.
This is an all round course that contributes to the education of the whole
pupil; academically, physically and socially.
The lower school is trained along the same guidelines. Pupils are conditioned
to warm up learning about and targeting specific muscle groups. Each half term
a new activity is introduced. During the autumn half term, pupils focus on field
hockey. The colder wetter second half term sees us indoors focusing on basketball.
Spring brings on badminton and jogging and the summer half terms herald athletics,
swimming and cricket. In addition to Phys. Ed and throughout the year, pupils
have one lesson per week with our professional football coach, Mr Jackson.
We have a number of extra curricular activities running in conjunction with
Phys. Ed. including badminton, basketball, ‘boxercise’, fencing, fitness
club, golf, horse riding, judo, netball, swimming and yoga.
Our pupils are expected to behave responsibly, with consideration to others
and to high level of sportsmanship at all times.
