Moorland Boarding School and Day School

The Senior School follows the criteria set down in the National Curriculum. Whilst we fully support its content we also believe in retaining the best traditional approaches and values in the education of our pupils, in order for them to become well rounded individuals. Moorland School

Science Department

We have one fully equipped laboratory, and another two planned for the new classroom block. The teaching staff are supported by a full-time technician, allowing an emphasis on practical work. The school has ample resources, allowing a variety of teaching and learning approaches, and computing skills are developed during science lessons. A balanced mix of physics, chemistry and biology are taught throughout the year.

In years 7, 8 and 9, the teaching is designed to cover the key stage 3 QCA scheme of work, meeting yearly teaching objectives emphasising the success of all pupils. Each pupil has an individual target level based on prior achievement in SATs, and is regularly assessed with reference to this target.
The current year 11 are all entered for AQA modular science, double award. Pupils study physics, chemistry and biology, this course is being withdrawn.

In September 2006, we adopted the OCR Gateway suite of science qualifications. This is a broad and practically based collection of courses, which amply prepares pupils for 'A' level in scientific subjects. The current year 10 are divided into two groups. One group follows ‘science’ and ‘additional science’, equivalent to the previous dual award science. The second group have extra lessons, and follow three separate GCSE awards, ‘biology’, ‘chemistry’ and ‘physics’. In addition, they are able to achieve the general ‘science’ award.

In 2006, our GCSE results for science were superb. Every pupil (100%) passed with a C or higher. Over two thirds of the pupils passed with grade B - A*.
